§lPreface.§0 §0The first in what we§0 §0hope will be a series§0 §0of themed§0 §0architectural guides,§0 §0this volume introduces§0 §0the reader to all five§0 §0of Norlund’s known§0 §0and extant church§0 §0buildings. 4-6 drawings§0 §0have been supplied§0 §0for each building. Due

to the constraints of§0 §0this format, some of§0 §0these are in “portrait”§0 §0and others in§0 §0“landscape”§0 §0orientation. The§0 §0cardinal orientation of§0 §0each drawing is§0 §0indicated by a letter in§0 §0square brackets next§0 §0to its type in the list§0 §0at the beginning of§0 §0each chapter;

In a frozen mountain§0 §0valley, high in the§0 §0northern Norlish Alps,§0 §0lies the mysterious§0 §0fortress of Irithyll.§0 §0Constructed and§0 §0governed by Pontiff§0 §0RobM, in an age long§0 §0forgotten by all but§0 §0the oldest inhabitants§0 §0of Norlund, this§0 §0forbidding stone keep
Page 19 of 42
boasts an exotic§0 §0chapel at the north§0 §0end of its ground§0 §0floor (the only§0 §0publicly accessible§0 §0floor). The focal point§0 §0of this chapel is an§0 §0elevated stone§0 §0altar-desk from which§0 §0(presumably) the§0 §0Pontiff could both§0 §0celebrate the§0 §0mysteries of his

religion and also§0 §0pontificate. Above this§0 §0altar-desk hangs a§0 §0sandstone Latin cross§0 §0(“Z”, pp. 14 & 17);§0 §0embedded in either§0 §0side wall is a Latin§0 §0cross made of local§0 §0blue ice (“w”, pp. 15 &§0 §017). A chandelier§0 §0featuring both§0 §0torches and a single§0 §0glowstone mass

(“G”, p. 16) hangs§0 §0overhead to light the§0 §0room. The chapel§0 §0seems to double as a§0 §0kind of library, with§0 §0corner bookshelves§0 §0on the front (north)§0 §0wall, and small§0 §0bookshelves embedded§0 §0in the side walls§0 §0between the two rows§0 §0of long pews (seating§0 §020 in total).

Though little is known§0 §0about the religious§0 §0beliefs and practice§0 §0of this Pontiff and his§0 §0followers, some of§0 §0their architectural§0 §0emphases seem in§0 §0hindsight to have§0 §0anticipated those that§0 §0would appear in a§0 §0later age of Norlish§0 §0church-building: the

likely in either case).§0 §0The Irithyll chapel is§0 §0however unique in§0 §0many ways: it is the§0 §0only Norlish church§0 §0building entirely§0 §0lacking windows (of§0 §0course these would§0 §0have detracted from§0 §0the fortress’ primary§0 §0function), and indeed§0 §0the only case in

Norlund of a chapel§0 §0integrated into a§0 §0building of another§0 §0type. Later§0 §0constructions have§0 §0also tended to avoid§0 §0the entirely§0 §0rectangular layout,§0 §0and to use shorter§0 §0pews. Neither§0 §0sandstone nor ice has§0 §0yet been seen in§0 §0another Norlish§0 §0church.

St. Euphemia was an RL§0 §04th century martyr;§0 §0her name means§0 §0“well-spoken” or “well§0 §0spoken of”. In the§0 §0tradition of the Norlish§0 §0Papacy, she is§0 §0venerated as “the§0 §0All-Praised”, and as§0 §0the particular patron§0 §0of the poor of the§0 §0Laketown (now§0 §0Condor) district.

Constructed by Pope§0 §0Leobonet in (roughly)§0 §0January 2020, the§0 §0Church of St. Euphemia§0 §0sits at the top of an§0 §018-step stairway on§0 §0the high street§0 §0overlooking the§0 §0wooden huts and§0 §0wharves along the§0 §0lakeshore. Built§0 §0entirely of stone, it’s

many tall glass§0 §0windows are uniformly§0 §0stained dark green.§0 §0This colour choice was§0 §0determined by the§0 §0limits of Norlund’s§0 §0glass production§0 §0industry in those§0 §0early days; but it has§0 §0since become a§0 §0standard feature of§0 §0Papist churches,

though many more§0 §0colours of stained§0 §0glass are now widely§0 §0available. The§0 §0entrance is flanked by§0 §0two tall, elegantly§0 §0tapering decorative§0 §0spires, each crowned§0 §0with a Latin cross in§0 §0iron. Overlaying the§0 §0green glass of the§0 §0large window on the

furniture at the front§0 §0(south) end: an altar,§0 §0bearing the Latin text,§0 §0“Astra Regunt Homines,§0 §0Sed Regit Astra Deus”§0 §0(“The stars govern§0 §0men, but God governs§0 §0the stars”); and,§0 §0immediately behind it, a§0 §0wooden episcopal§0 §0throne.

In the church yard§0 §0east of the main§0 §0building, a massive§0 §0stone bell hangs from§0 §0an elaborate wooden§0 §0housing. This bell was§0 §0intended both for§0 §0religious use,§0 §0summoning the faithful§0 §0to their prayers; and§0 §0for civic use, as an§0 §0alarm in emergency

situations. Sadly, it was§0 §0almost entirely§0 §0destroyed, along with§0 §0some of the church’s§0 §0interior pews and§0 §0flooring, in a March§0 §02020 bandit raid.
